The baseball coach asked me to help them with their running and flexibility. They think since I help with track that I know everything. I actually don't know much at all about baseball. I honestly don't know that much about track either, other than I really like it. I like to be supportive though, so I told them I would help out.
Today was the first day of fall practice. We all met in a classroom to lay down the groundwork and see who all wanted to play and all that good stuff. Each coach spoke. The main guy, who of course gave a wonderful beginning of the year speech. The lady that is kinda the assistant, gave a few woman tips, like get a glove and wear warm clothes when it gets cold. And then.. they look at me to give them my pep talk (mind you.. I had no idea I was going to need to give a pep talk to being the season) So I just say kinda what I had been thinking when I looked at the group, which ended up being pretty darn good I might add! It went something like this...
Think of a professional baseball player... you got one in mind? what does he look like? one kid pips up "like me!" and I said ok whatever but how he is different? A few kids add in "bigger!" "stronger!" and then someone said "faster!"
Bigger. Stronger. Faster.
Those are our goals. And we will achieve them. Yall get ready to work, and that's pretty much all I have to say guys!
Short and sweet.
Then we head out to the field. They look pretty good. A few can't really catch and a few don't have gloves and their underwear was hangin out... but overall a decent group.
Ive got one kid out there that's in my class, who is pretty much straight off the street, but I'm determined to keep him out there. He said he is going to be the star, so we will see. He definitely catches like a girl though.
Looks like helping with baseball might be fun.

Snot rockets & possible overdose
Snot rockets
I was just teaching away one day and then a kid just blurted out “Hey can I go to the bathroom to blow my nose?” and I said “just wait until we finish this part of the lesson.” He was obviously not sick. Then he asked why not and I told him to just wait again.
So I start back talking about parallel planes, but then I hear something..
He is holding one side of his nose… blowing out his boogers onto the floor!!
I just stared. I mean really.. what do you do?
Possible Overdose
Sometimes kids say they are going to be sick just to get out of class. This doesn’t happen much, but some will say that. A guy was sleep in my class so I went to wake him up, and then a few min later he looked up at me. Oh! he looked BAD and then said he needed to go to the bathroom because he thought he was about to be sick. Of course I let him go.
About 5 min later the security guard opened my door and called me out to the hallway. The guy was standing there and he was just sweating profusely and could barely stand up. The security guard said he had walked out of my room rounded the corner into the bathroom and then lied down on the floor and fell asleep!
So he went to the nurse and stayed for the rest of the day, but I never got a chance to go down and check on him.
Security guard said she overheard some other guys say to him something out being a rookie and he couldn’t handle it… so that was suspicious.
I called his mom after school to see how he was and she said she was about to take him to the emergency room. But he was at school the very next day just fine and said he was going to the doctor that afternoon! Weird.

We shook on it
I have fun story about a certain kid. Let call him Joe. Joe was in my class last year. Joe is an inclusion student, which means he has some type of learning disability. He is TALL… like.. he almost has to duck to get into the door. DARK skin. He doesn’t smile much, but when he does he has the sweetest smile. I think he is a member of one of the main gangs in Memphis. He doesn’t talk much and he always sat in my smallest desk. He would ask to go to the bathroom almost every day. Many of those times he would not come back. Some days he wouldn’t come to class. I wrote him up 5 times for skipping but this continued. He would not complete any work. Even when I gave him work I knew he could do, he would put his name on it and turn it in.
Surprisingly he did not pass.
Well.. Wednesday got here. New school year. Guess who is on my roll? Joe.
BUT let me just tell you what Joe has been doing.
He has been on time every day. He has sat in the seat I asked him to. He has completed ALL assignments. He even scored better than average on my first test I gave! And one day he even raised his hand to ask if he got a certain answer right! Then asked me to go to the bathroom. I laughed and said “We aren’t starting this again but go ahead and come right back!” GUESS what he did! He came right back!!
I am just flabbergasted. I called him over to me when I saw him in the hallway later on in the day and asked him “If I let you go to the bathroom everyday... will you make an A in my class?”
He smiled a sweet little smile and said yes mam. So we shook on it..
I am so excited to see how this goes!!

Back to School
This week had been great. It is so WEIRD to be back again! It is very nice though.. it feels like home and I am a million times more comfortable than I was this time last year. I re-arranged my room and got all organized so that’s been helpful.
I have 2 classes of regular ed geometry and one class of 9th grade honors kids. They are pretty good. Problems include… checking, farting, and not knowing what 7 plus 4 is.
Checking is just making fun of someone, but they will have like competitions with it. Some of my kids mumble and they all sound the same at first, so there is no way to snag one of them at first. However, this morning a kid came in to ask for another kid, and them some random kid said “hey tell him hey nig** bi***” Everyone quickly turned to look at me and see what I was going to do. Of course I sent him to the office! Poor guy gave me the biggest spill on why not to and I should believe in second chances, but I have to start out tough! I have a hard enough time being tough, so I had to send him. The rest of the time in that class was just so peaceful though! I like when I scare them :) haha.
Why is farting so funny? One girl today asked to move seats because the boys around her kept farting. When I was in high school you held those things in! But not these boys.. it seems like they are pushing them out for everyone to laugh. And what do you say?? Hold it in? I tried that. They responded “No! It hurts!” And then that caused more trouble than just ignoring it all together.
My kids this semester seem to be a little more well off than mine last year. They knew what "like terms" meant and most knew what parallel lines are today, so that’s good. Two kids did however argue with me that 4 plus 7 was 10! Two of them together ganged up on me and they were just sure that 4 plus 7 was 10. I had to show them on my fingers that it was 11. It was pretty hilarious.
Overall.. it should be a good semester. It was so cool to have kids come into my room and tell me they miss my class! And then I had a few of my boys come to me and tell me they are going to make Principal’s List this semester, so we will be how that goes. I feel like a mom! Its so funny.
I love my job.
